Depending on the general condition of your staircase, steps, and handrails, it is important to define the work to be done and the choice of colors to perfectly harmonize with the interior of your home.

L’Artisan du Plancher in Montreal and its team of experienced master sanders offer a complete service for refurbishing your hardwood stairs. We sand, strip, and sand your staircase and replace your wooden stair steps if necessary. Moreover, our highly qualified artisans will ensure that the staircase is perfectly cleaned and sanded before being varnished. We then apply the varnish in three coats, thus protecting your staircase while adding a decorative touch.

How to varnish a wooden staircase?

We start by preparing your staircase so that it is perfectly dry, and to work the wood correctly, we use quality tools, such as fine-grit sandpaper, a vibrating sander, a powerful vacuum cleaner as well as a dusting brush, a stripping product, a degreaser, and other supplies necessary for a precise and professional result.

First of all, the staircase renovation process requires the removal of the old damaged layer. For this, we use a stripping product to easily remove the varnish and paint. Afterwards, comes a light sanding of the staircase, using the sander on the steps and fine-grit sandpaper for the rest so that the new layers of paint penetrate deeply into the wood pores. We then dust the staircase by vacuuming to remove sanding residues and then clean the staircase with a damp cloth to facilitate the adhesion of the varnish. Moreover, some oily woods may require one or more degreasing treatments with synthetic thinner.

After carefully preparing the wood, we apply the base coat with a roller on the steps and with a brush on the harder-to-reach areas. We prefer to use a floor varnish that is resistant, very low yellowing, and has a low VOC content. Finally, we apply several finishing coats on your wooden staircase to protect it and give it a perfect shine.
