Take advantage of 30 years of experience in staircase sanding, repair, and varnishing in Montréal, Laval, and the South Shore!

To beautify your wood staircase and give it style, follow the advice of an artisan in varnished staircase renovation!

Based on the overall condition of your staircase, steps, and railings, it’s important to define the work to be performed and the colour choice to harmonize the interior of your home perfectly.

L’Artisan du Plancher Montréal and its team of experienced master sanders offers you comprehensive hardwood staircase renovation service. We sand, strip, and sandblast your staircase and replace your wooden staircase steps if needed. In addition, our highly qualified artisans will ensure that the staircase is perfectly cleaned and sanded before being varnished. We then apply three layers of varnish, thus making it possible to protect your staircase while adding a decorative touch to it.

How to varnish a wood staircase

First, we begin by preparing your staircase so that it’s perfectly dry, and to work the wood correctly, we use quality tools, such as fine-grit sandpaper, an orbital sander, a powerful vacuum cleaner as well as a dust brush, a stripper, a degreaser, and other supplies necessary for a precise and professional result.

Above all, the staircase renovation process requires – first and foremost – the removal of the old damaged layer. To do this, we use a stripper to easily remove the varnish and paint. After that comes a light sanding of the staircase, using the sander on the steps and fine-grit sandpaper for the rest, so that the new layers of paint can penetrate deep into the pores of the wood. We then dust the staircase with the vacuum cleaner to remove the sanding residues, then clean the staircase with a damp cloth to facilitate the adhesion of the varnish. Furthermore, certain oily woods may require one or more degreasings with synthetic thinner.

After preparing the wood with precision, we apply the base coat with a roller on the steps, and with a brush on the harder-to-reach areas. We prefer to use a resistant floor varnish that doesn’t yellow very much and has a low VOC content. Finally, we apply several layers of finish to your wooden staircase to protect it and give it a perfect shine.
