Guide to repairing an oiled floor
Please note that if the scratches on your oiled wood flooring are not embedded in the boards, you can skip directly to the step of applying the impregnating oil and satin finish oil.
To repair your oiled parquet, follow the steps below:
- When your wood is dented and/or has an embedded scratch, you need to apply wood filler with a spatula to the affected area. Use the necessary precautions to make a local application, taking care not to spread it around. Wait for the wood filler to dry completely.
- Gently sand the area where you applied the wood filler. Use 120-grit sandpaper to smooth the surface. We recommend slightly breaking the grain of the sandpaper before starting to repair your oiled parquet. To do this, gently rub the abrasive part of two pieces of sandpaper together.
- You should always use compatible floor oils. We recommend using the same products that were initially used on your parquet. Apply a thin layer of impregnating oil (neutral or colored) with a pad or according to the manufacturer’s recommendations and wipe off the excess with a cloth. It’s better to apply less and add more until you achieve the right shade. Let it dry for 6 hours.
- Finish your repair by applying a thin layer of satin finish oil. Use a pad or follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for an even application. Wait about 15 to 20 minutes and rub with 00 grade steel wool to crystallize the retouched surface. Allow it to dry for a few hours before light foot traffic.
Note that repairs to oiled floors are always done in the direction of the strips and/or wood grain.
Tip: If you apply the impregnating oil to the scratch and it doesn’t penetrate/color the affected area, gently rub the area with a damp cloth (water) to open the wood pores and promote oil penetration.
