Quebec Hardwoods and Flooring: 3 Things to Know

When choosing a material for our hardwood flooring construction, we must consider several factors, including hardness. This will indicate whether the wood will resist wear over time. Quebec hardwoods come from deciduous trees. Conifers are rather softwood species.

But be careful! A hardwood is not always the best choice. It all depends on what we want to build.

How is wood hardness measured?

The hardness of a wood species is measured by the Janka scale. Elle correspond à la force nécessaire pour enfoncer à moitié dans le bois une bille d’acier de 11,28 mm de diamètre.

Generally, deciduous species, such as maple, oak, and birch are hardwoods. Conifers, such as fir, spruce, and pine, are softwood species. Exotic wood species, such as ipe, lapacho, or cumaru, are the most resistant. These are referred to as ‘extra-hard woods’.

Is a hardwood necessarily better?

It all depends on what you want to do. In craftsmanship, for example, softwood species are prioritized because they are easier to work with. Conversely, extra-hard woods will be more used to build patios, decks, or fences. The latter have a lifespan of 40 to 50 years minimum and resist exceptionally well to water and UV rays.

However, it’s important to mention that some extra-hard woods have limitations. Despite its exceptional hardness, ipe does not withstand very dry winters well, which is not really ideal for Quebec’s climate. Cumaru can also be infested with lyctus beetles, harmful insects that are difficult to detect. Moreover, extra-hard woods like Brazilian flooring change color when exposed to sunlight.

For interior hardwood floors, Quebec hardwoods are to be preferred.

Bamboo is a very ecological choice because it regenerates very quickly. It reaches maturity after 5 years. Pour les autres espèces, cela peut prendre 50 ans.

Be careful with humidity levels

Quebec hardwood species are sensitive to humidity levels. It is therefore necessary to ensure that it remains constant in the house. If you live in a half-basement, you can use a dehumidifier to maintain a good humidity level.
