How to Clean and Care for Your Oiled Floor Properly

Caring for an oiled floor must be done according to certain rules that are outlined below. To preserve the surface of your floor for many years, it’s important to use the right products. Degreasers must be avoided. In any event, water should be used sparingly. You should never spread a large amount of water over the floor, since your floor could warp. Follow the oiled floor maintenance guide below and you’ll be guaranteed to safely carry out the proper maintenance of your flooring.

Follow the Oiled Floor Maintenance Guide:

  • For the first four weeks following the last layer of protective oil, your oiled floor is in treatment. During this maturation period, you should not wash your floor or use detergent, water, or liquid of any kind on your wood floor, since you risk staining or damaging it.
  • The recommendations for the preservation of a varnished floor also apply to the preservation of an oiled floor. • Please note that these products are specially designed for cleaning an oiled floor. You should therefore avoid using other cleaners. Specify to your retailer that your floors have been coated with a protective impregnating oil. Also specify the name of the manufacturer of the floor oil that you used to protect your wooden slats, since different components may be present depending on the manufacturer.
  • Read the instructions on the label of the cleaning products carefully and follow them rigorously. The manufacturer Bona offers a line of professional products for cleaning your oiled floor properly while nourishing it.
  • If your surface shows differences in shine or stains in certain places, clean it rigorously with a mop moistened with water. The oils that protect your slats will restore a uniform appearance. Then, apply the oiled floor restorer to restore its authenticity.
  • Depending on the traffic that your floor experiences, it’s strongly recommended to apply one or two layers of oil to your floors when they show signs of visible wear and tear. We’ve designed a section that explains how to apply oil occasionally: long-term oiled floor care.
  • If you have a commercial surface, plan to use the services of an oiled floor professional once a year. If you own a residential property, you can retain the services of an oiling expert once every three to five years.
  • Finally, each time you apply an additional layer of oil to your hardwood floor, you improve its resistance and its appearance. Over time, with regular maintenance, you’ll obtain a beautiful patina, similar to that of European homes.

Use this maintenance guide if you want to preserve your wood. Poor maintenance of the oil that covers your floor could wind up damaging the wood. Make sure that the oil coating is always present in sufficient quantities on top of the slats.

Uncovered wood risks becoming stained or blackened. When the wood is affected, you should sand it thoroughly to even it out and then apply the oil again. L’Artisan du Plancher is a specialized Montréal-based company that takes care of all types of repairs and renovations of wood floors.
