Manufacturing a false stringer: what are the steps to follow?

The false stringer of a staircase serves to designate a stringer that primarily fulfills aesthetic functions. It is placed above or below the steps, depending on the staircase configuration. For example, in a stairwell where the steps are placed against a wall, the false stringer will be installed above the steps to create a junction between them and the wall.

To create a beautiful result, it is very important to take the time to make very precise calculations and create a visual plan. You must also decide on the height and thickness of the false stringer.

Materials for making a false stringer

The false stringer can be made from any type of wood or wood product (e.g., plywood). Generally, it is preferable to use the same type of wood as that of the staircase. Otherwise, you can also create a false stringer that borrows the same color as the wall, or that contrasts but blends well with the decor.

It is possible to make a false stringer with several large pieces of wood, or numerous small detached pieces. If you choose the first option, which is the most recommended, it will be important that you select pieces of wood that are wide enough to cut out the trace of the step and create a uniform-sized stringer. The second alternative involves much more calculation and time devoted to the task. However, for certain types of staircases, you will be forced to opt for this technique.

The cutting stage

At this stage, you will need a square, a level, and a measuring tape to trace the steps on the piece(s) of wood. You will of course have made your calculations beforehand to ensure that the part of the step that will fit the false stringer will be cut out of the piece of wood.

This calculation must take into account the angle of the staircase, the dimensions of the steps and risers, as well as those of the nosings and treads. To do this, place the piece(s) of wood above (or below, as the case may be) the steps. Using the square and level, measure the difference between the various elements mentioned earlier and the false stringer.

Once you have traced the steps on the wood, proceed with the cutting, which you will do using a circular saw adapted to the format of the pieces of wood you are working with. The cut must be made with precision, so that the false stringer fits perfectly on the steps.

Installing the false stringer

Now that the cutting is finished, the next step is to slide the stringer onto (or under) the steps. When the false stringer is in place, tap lightly and/or use finishing nails to fix it to the wall.

Getting a custom-made false stringer

In the case of a straight staircase, making a false stringer is a relatively simple operation. However, as soon as there is a turn, a curve, or any other irregularity in terms of shape, the calculations become more complex and one often ends up with a result that is not harmonious. If you have a helical staircase, the work is likely to be even more complicated.

To avoid this kind of situation, it is preferable to call on specialists. They have the necessary tools and expertise to manufacture a false staircase stringer that is adapted to its shape and aesthetic aspect.
