Want to know how to move a piano on hardwood flooring? An upright piano weighs between 130 and 400 kg. A grand piano can weigh up to 700 kg. You cannot move this heavy object by yourself. You not only need the help of several people but also need to be careful not to damage the floor. Here are some tips to achieve this.
1. Pay attention to the humidity level
Your instrument, if made of wood, can be damaged by humidity. Therefore, the best time to move your piano on hardwood flooring is spring or late autumn. If you absolutely must do it during the warm season, you can hire a moving company. Some of them have special vans that maintain the humidity level.
2. Ask for help from your friends
The transport of pianos is not done alone. You should normally need the help of 4 people to accomplish this task. The more people, the better. However, do not ask people with back problems or children to help you transport your piano.
3. Wear comfortable clothing
Before moving your piano on hardwood flooring, take the time to choose your clothing. You should choose loose and comfortable clothes. Avoid pants that are too tight as they could tear when you try to lift the piano. Also wear sports shoes and gloves with a rubber palm for a better grip.
4. Close the lid to protect the keys
To protect your piano keys, close the lid and make sure it stays closed throughout the move. Lock it with the lock or use adhesive tape (if there is no lock). The tape should not leave paint marks on the piano.
5. Clear the path before moving the piano on hardwood flooring
Several pieces of furniture could block your way when you try to transport the piano. Clear them from the start to avoid them becoming too cumbersome. If the exit door cannot stay open, have someone hold it while the piano is being moved through.
6. Protect your hardwood flooring with blankets
When moving your instrument from one room to another, you must ensure to protect your floor. Therefore, you should slide it on a blanket. For longer moves, you can wrap your piano in blankets and secure them with electrical tape.
7. Move the piano on hardwood flooring safely
To move the piano on hardwood flooring properly, you need the help of at least 2 people at the front and back of the piano. If possible, you can also have the help of other people to hold the instrument on the sides of the piano. Place the piano on a wheeled dolly to move it from one residence to another.
