How to make an oiled floor step by step?

Do you dream of an oiled floor? But what makes oil enhance a floor? Oil nourishes the wood and protects it from wear, dust, and household products, while preserving the beautiful original appearance of this noble material. The oil doesn’t just protect the surface of the parquet, but it penetrates the wood deeply for a lasting treatment.

1 – Choosing the floor oil

You will quickly notice that there is a considerable choice of floor oils of all kinds and in different price ranges. Note that floor oil has a fairly high purchase cost, which is its main disadvantage, but it has so many advantages! Generally applicable to all wood species, the oils you will find in stores come in different shades and allow you to enhance or not the color of your floor. We advise you to opt for an ecological and natural floor oil to protect your wood, but also the health of the occupants. You will also need to choose between a clear (transparent) or tinted (colored) oil. We recommend a tinted oil, as it has the advantage of being 5 times more durable and will require less maintenance than an oil without coloration. Finally, don’t forget if necessary to think about the undercoat that will be applicable before the oil during your purchasing process. Check with a professional to know if you need it.

2 – Prepare your floor

The preparation phase of your floor allows you to make your floor clean and smooth in order to durably absorb the oil afterwards. To begin, you need to repair all the scratches, cracks, or holes that are on your floor with the help of a professional.

Then should come the sanding phase of your floor to best eliminate all stains and marks before the oil makes them indelible. For this, preferably opt for sanding using a belt sander, a professional device that will do the job perfectly for you. Because this device will make a lot of dust, the next step is to dust the entire room using a vacuum cleaner before repeating the operation a second time. To finish, you will need to think about sanding the corners and nooks that are less visible but accessible using an angle sander. Finish the sanding with a thorough cleaning of the room!

3 – Oiling and polishing the floor

Now comes the time to apply the oil to your beautiful floor. To start, apply the oil on your floor generously using a brush or roller specially designed for this purpose. Let the product penetrate the wood quietly for the time indicated by the manufacturer and then move on to the polishing step using a single-brush machine making circular movements. Then let it dry quietly by opening the windows of the room concerned.

4 – Finishing touches and regular maintenance

Congratulations, you’ve almost made an oiled floor! You can now carry out the finishing touches, which is a good cleaning of the finished work. However, wait 30 days before wetting or cleaning the floor with a mop and before covering the floor with a cloth or carpet. You can proceed by starting with vacuuming and then passing a mop that can be damp and soaked with black soap (oil greatly appreciates black soap and it’s a natural cleaner!). There you have it, you will finally have before you the oiled floor you dreamed of. Repeat these operations about every six months to a year.
