How to install flooring without removing baseboards?

It is possible to install flooring without removing baseboards. However, you need to install quarter rounds when there are already baseboards. Learn more about quarter rounds and how to install them.

What is a quarter round?

Quarter rounds are installed on floors to protect baseboards. They can also be used in interior decoration to highlight the floor covering or to hide imperfections between floating flooring and the base of the wall.

A quarter round should also be installed to leave a space between the wall and the floor. This allows for an expansion joint so that the floor can expand and contract without being obstructed by the wall.

Quarter rounds can be made of PVC (which cannot be painted) or MDF (if you want to paint them).

How to install quarter rounds?

First, install the quarter rounds on the longest walls to avoid running out of material if you need to cut others. You can also add an additional joint for the ends located in less visible corners.

Install the quarter rounds end to end. Then nail them into the baseboard if there is one. Otherwise, use 5 cm nails to fix them to the walls.

Quarter rounds are cut at a 45-degree angle for interior and exterior corners of frames and at a 15 to 20-degree angle for door edges or frames.

What are the other uses of quarter rounds?

Quarter rounds are not only installed at the bottom of walls. They are also used on walls and ceilings. They can also be used on window sills when the window frame extends beyond the wall.

How to maintain baseboards?

To maintain your baseboards, dust them regularly with a microfiber cloth. Wash them with hot water and dish soap, applying this solution with a well-wrung cloth or sponge. To give them some shine, use a furniture polish product and rub them with a cloth.

What are the different wood baseboard options available?

There are different types of baseboards, but wood baseboards have an advantage in terms of aesthetics and durability. These can be classified into 2 categories: solid wood baseboards and MDF baseboards. Solid wood baseboards are more aesthetic and durable, but they are also more expensive. MDF baseboards are an excellent choice for smaller budgets.
